Leading Journal of the Irish & UK Fishing Industries

Leading offshore wind energy company Ocean Winds (OW), and Bord na Móna, an Irish renewable energy developer leading Ireland towards a climate neutral future, launched their joint venture partnership in late 2022 in a collaborative effort to deliver offshore renewable wind energy in Ireland.

Bord na Móna and Ocean Winds are delighted to announce they will be exhibiting at the Irish Skipper Expo 2025.

At next year’s show in Limerick, they plan to connect with members of the marine industry as well as educating those about green energy to ensure Ireland has a sustainable future, “As renewable energy developers we believe it is key to speak to the fishing community to understand how we can work together while ensuring Ireland can progress towards a green energy future.”

At the Bord na Móna Ocean Winds stand at Irish Skipper Expo, they plan to provide a variety of activities as well as educating visitors on the progress being made in Ireland and around the world in relation to offshore wind energy:

  • Members of our project team will be there to discuss the progress being made in the Irish offshore wind space
  • Opportunity to experience an immersive 3D video of an Ocean Winds floating offshore wind farm (Wind Float Atlantic) in Portugal
  • Meeting with members of our project team including our Community Liaison Officer and Fisheries Liaison Officer
  • Opportunity to sign up to our mailing list

The Bord na Móna Oceans Winds joint venture have had a successful year in the marine industry, highlighting 3 of the company’s most recent successes:

Rosslare Europort Strategic Partnership:

In June 2024,Ocean Winds and Bord na Móna signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Iarnród Éireann (Port Authority for Rosslare Europort) to develop suitable port and harbour solutions for delivering offshore wind developments. “This MOU represents a significant step t

owards creating the necessary infrastructure to support large-scale renewable energy projects, which are vital for achieving Ireland’s climate goals. We believe that Rosslare Eurosport’s strategic location and capabilities make it an ideal hub for offshore wind projects.”

Supply Chain Engagement:

In 2024 the Bord na Móna Ocean Winds joint venture project team had in depth engagement with the Port of Cork Company, Shannon Foynes Port, MAREI, National Maritime College of Ireland (NMCI) and the Industrial Development Authority in Dublin.

The Bord na Móna Ocean Winds joint venture has also facilitated fact finding missions for the Minister for Enterprise and Employment and senior departmental officials with their Scottish counterparts. These fact-finding engagements explored the potential for collaboration between Ireland and Scotland on a range of offshore wind-focused matters such as building a successful supply chain and optimising Research, Development and Innovation {RD&I} initiatives.

Ocean Winds partner with UL Researchers:

Ocean Wind’s semi-submersible floating offshore wind farm, WindFloat Atlantic partnered with researchers from the University of Limerick (UL).

In 2024 WindFloat Atlantic was used as a testing platform for the UL developed remote- operated vehicle to assist with the challenges of maintaining these complex structures offshore. Inspecting a floating turbine is complex due to the movement of the structure, an effect that the UL team successfully minimised by using an adaptive control system for the remote-operated vehicle.
