Leading Journal of the Irish & UK Fishing Industries

Kerry ETB attended Skipper Expo Int. Galway for the first time to launch their new Marine Engineering Traineeship, which has been designed with the input of a number of industry employers.

During the Expo, they introduced the programme to a range of industry employers and there was a broad level of interest in the programme.  The traineeship is designed to provide new entrants to the boat building and maintenance industry with the necessary skills to hit the ground running when they enter employment.

Ioseph Nestor of Kerry ETB said: “There is a significant cost saving for employers hiring trainees as they will also be fully trained on health and safety topics relevant to the industry.  There were also a number of enquiries from potential trainees who want to join the programme, and following on from the Expo we have seen an increase in applications from potential trainees from all parts of the country.  The traineeship includes nine weeks of work experience, which will enable the trainees to apply their skills in the workplace and allow employers to test the skills of the trainees.

“The traineeship will start in September and Kerry ETB are still interested in speaking to employers and trainees who would like to get involved.”
