The Scottish Fishermen’s Federation (SFF) is once again delighted to be a principal sponsor of the Scottish Skipper Expo.
As in previous years, the Expo is an excellent opportunity for fishermen, processors, suppliers and policymakers to join together, exchange ideas and showcase innovation across the fishing industry. The Expo takes place in the closing stages of the Scottish Parliamentary election campaign with the first day of the show being the day that Scots cast their votes at polling stations.
Against this backdrop, the SFF has set out its own clear vision for the sector through the publication of its manifesto, outlining priorities to ensure a thriving, sustainable, safe and economically resilient fishing industry for years to come.
The Federation’s manifesto emphasises the need for evidence-based policymaking, continued access to fishing grounds and recognition of the industry’s central role in food security and the blue economy. It also calls for constructive engagement with government to balance environmental objectives with the realities of a modern, responsible fishing fleet and the socio-economic benefits that brings.
With strong public support for fishermen highlighted in its own polling, the SFF believes politicians need to be more attentive to building a positive future for the sector.
SFF chief executive Elspeth Macdonald and her team will be present throughout the event and look forward to engaging with fishermen, stakeholders and political representatives alike.
“The Skipper Expo remains a cornerstone event for our industry,” she said. “Following the Expo, we will have a new government and new faces in office and in parliament for the sector to engage with and convince that our roadmap as set out in our manifesto is the one to follow.”
As ever, the SFF extends its thanks to the organisers for delivering a flagship event that continues to reflect the strength, resilience and innovation of the sector.
