Despite 50% of the national population residing within 5km of the coast, recruitment remains largely within 25% of the male population. Currently, female participation across NMCI’s maritime courses stands at 10.76%, which is five times the industry average, reflecting a positive growth of 3.28% over the last ten years. However, NMCI acknowledges that more work is required in this space and is committed to driving change through advocacy and collaboration.\n\nAddressing Maritime Career and Training Gaps\n\nMaritime careers in Ireland remain underfunded and under-supported, and NMCI is actively working to address these gaps. NMCI recognises the need for greater female advocacy in maritime education and training, ensuring more opportunities for underrepresented groups within the industry. To support career development, NMCI has launched a Careers Portal for Career Guidance Teachers and has introduced a selection of CAO Advisory videos to assist students in making informed choices about their futures in the maritime sector.\n\nThe Cullen PhD Scholarship: Advancing Maritime Research\n\nIn recognition of the importance of research and innovation in the maritime sector, NMCI recently announced the 2025 Cullen PhD Scholarship, a fully funded 4-year PhD project as a full-time programme of study, providing a stipend of €25,000.00 per annum. This PhD is supported by the Marine Institute and funded under the Marine Research Programme by the Government of Ireland.\n\nStrengthening Training for Seafarers and Renewable Sector Professionals\n\nAs the maritime industry evolves, NMCI remains steadfast in its dedication to the training and development of seafarers through internationally recognised STCW and STCW  training. These programmes ensure that Irish seafarers remain highly skilled and compliant with global safety and operational standards.\n\nIn response to the rapid growth of offshore renewable energy (ORE) and the increasing demand for specialised skills, NMCI, through NMCI Training Services, now provides industry-leading Global Wind Organisation (GWO) initial and refresher training. These courses support professionals new to or pivoting into, the offshore wind sector, enhancing Ireland’s workforce capacity to meet the demands of the renewable energy industry.\n\n\n\nExpanding Expertise: Cyber Security and Micro-Credentials\n\nIn addition to its core maritime and offshore training, NMCI recognises the evolving challenges of the digital age and the necessity of cross-sector expertise. New offerings such as Cyber Security training, Certificate in the Business of Maritime Autonomous Ship Systems (MASS), and Online Maritime Leadership Training offer professionals’ opportunities to upskill in high-demand areas. These initiatives ensure that NMCI-trained personnel remain at the forefront of industry advancements.\n\nDriving Excellence in Maritime and Renewable Training\n\nNMCI’s dedication to developing Ireland’s maritime workforce remains unwavering. Through an expanding portfolio of degree and master programmes, research initiatives, and industry-aligned training, NMCI is playing a pivotal role in shaping the future of the maritime and offshore renewable sectors.\n\nFor further information on NMCI’s courses and training opportunities, please visit www.nmci.ie or contact NMCI at nmci.reception@mtu.ie.\n\n
