The Marine Stewardship Council, the world leading standard setter for sustainable seafood, is pleased to announce it is sponsoring the Sustainability Award in this year’s Fishing News Awards to be held ahead of the Scottish Skipper Expo on May 8.
Dr Bryce Stewart, Senior Lecturer at York University, will chair the judging panel which is also made up of Lisa Bennett, MSC UK & Ireland Senior Fisheries Outreach Manager, David Warwick, Seafish Fishing Gear Technologist and Hannah Fennell, President of Scottish Fishermen’s Association and Head of Orkney Fisheries Association.
The award recognises and celebrates efforts which are focused on innovative solutions to improving sustainability and environmental outcomes within the UK or Irish fishing industries.
Nominations must demonstrate a unique and innovative response to an environmental sustainability issue within the UK or Irish industry, demonstrate that the project has gone above and beyond standard practice, and provide evidence of its impact.
Lisa Bennett said: “Having been part of the judging panel in previous years, MSC is very proud to strengthen its partnership with Fishing News and its readers by sponsoring the Fishing News Sustainability Award this year. Improving sustainability in fishing is essential not only to protect fish stocks and the marine environment, but to protect livelihoods across the industry.”
The MSC will be hosting a stand at the Scottish Skipper Expo once more this year at stand number G16, come and chat to the team and learn more about sustainable fishing practices.
