Leading Journal of the Irish & UK Fishing Industries

Finning UK & Ireland, the world’s largest dealer of Cat® engines and parts, has worked with boat development company, Seaward, to supply a propulsion system for mark laying and committee vessels destined for the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club in Asia.

The Club, one of the oldest and most prestigious in the region, is renowned for its commitment to sailing and demands vessels that operate with optimum reliability and efficiency.

As part of the agreement with Seaward, Finning provided four Cat C7.1 engines. The 280BHP engines were integrated with a ZF280 marine reverse reduction gearbox and a ZF control system for optimal engine and gear control. This setup provides a complete engine room solution, which was engineered and packaged by a Finning project team in Cannock, United Kingdom.

The Finning-engineered propulsion solution ensured the engines have capacity to maintain performance in the challenging ambient temperature of 50°C, a critical requirement when operating in Asia’s varied climate conditions.

Stephen Caldwell, Sales Manager – Project Engines (Marine and Oil & Gas) at Finning UK & Ireland, said: “In direct response to Seaward’s need for a propulsion system that delivers consistent power in a range of temperatures, our team developed a solution centred around the Cat C7.1 engines. These engines are distinguished by their ability to sustain performance without derating, even at elevated temperatures.

“This capability is crucial as it ensures consistent power output and operational efficiency under all conditions, without compromising the engine’s lifespan or increasing maintenance needs. It’s a key factor in maximising vessel availability and reducing total cost of ownership, which is vital for operations like those of the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club.”

Chris Clayton, Managing Director at Seaward, said: “Choosing Finning and the CAT C7.1 engines was a pivotal decision for us. The reliability of the engines, coupled with the extended warranty coverage and unparalleled local Cat support – offered by Finning – ensures our vessels are equipped to meet our high standards for quality and durability. The local support offered from the Finning Poole branch also enhances our confidence in the longevity and performance of our fleet.”

This venture not only highlights the ability of Finning to meet client needs with precision-engineered solutions but also Seaward’s commitment to quality and performance. As part of the venture, Seaward have also ordered two more engines from Finning.
