Catchwise launches new functionality that turns catch history into a competitive edge

The new functionality gives skippers a clearer way to understand what has worked before and how to use that knowledge again.

Built closely with skippers and shaped by continuous feedback from the wheelhouse, the new functionality gives skippers a clearer way to understand what has worked before and how to use that knowledge again. Past hauls are visualised on a map and linked to the conditions they were taken in, including bottom temperature, currents, weather and depth. That makes it easier to spot patterns behind the best catches, not just remember where they happened.

The value, however, is not only in looking back. Catchwise uses those historical patterns to help skippers explore expected catch rates and species distribution across different areas and conditions. These insights can then be compared with today’s weather and ocean data to identify where similar opportunities may be appearing now.

Combined with premium AIS, which shows where other vessels are and where they have recently been active, Catchwise gives skippers a stronger basis for deciding where to go, how to position and when to move. It brings together their own experience, current conditions and a live view of the fleet in one place.

Today, Catchwise is used by more than 300 skippers. After building a strong foothold in the Norwegian market, the company has expanded to seven countries and is now increasing its focus on Scotland and the wider UK market.

“This launch is about helping skippers get more value from the data they already have,” said Tomas Roaldsnes, CEO of Catchwise. “By connecting the logbook with historic conditions, we can help skippers find where the ideal conditions are today. Combining that with a live view of vessel activity and weather forecasts, we give skippers better support for the decisions that matter most at sea.”

Catchwise will be exhibiting at stand B8 at Scottish Skipper Expo, and will also host a live demo in Meeting Room 2 on 7 May from 2.30 to 4.00 pm.
