In 1884, against the picturesque backdrop of Finnøy Island in Norway, Nils N. Finnøy (1865-1939) laid the foundation for a legacy of innovation that would resonate for generations. Growing up on the island, Nils honed his craftsmanship skills by forging horseshoes and fittings for the local fishing fleet. His determination led him to establish his own smithy, setting the stage for a tradition of maritime excellence. By the turn of the century, Nils N. Finnøy achieved a remarkable engineering feat, crafting the prototype of a stable-start motor – a four-stroke glow engine. Dubbed “The Finnøy Motor,” this creation marked a historic milestone as the first domestically built fishing boat engine in Norway.
In 1922, Nils N. Finnøy reached another milestone with the delivery of his first engine exceeding 200 horsepower, ushering in a new era of propulsion technology. As demand grew and technology advanced, Finnøy continued to innovate, developing larger and more powerful motors to meet the evolving needs of the maritime industry. In 1975, Finnøy Gear & Propeller concluded its engine production chapter after crafting 668 units with capacities reaching up to 360 horsepower. Rather than signaling an end, the company pivoted towards the production of reduction gearboxes and controllable pitch propellers, marking a new phase of growth.
Finnøy Gear & Propeller has a longstanding presence in Scottish trade shows, dating back to the 1980s. In 2016, the company made a successful return with its debut appearance at the Scottish Skipper Expo. This underscored Finnøy’s commitment to engaging with industry experts and celebrating the achievements of its founder, Nils N. Finnøy, who received accolades for his contributions to the marine sector in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1898, Nils N. Finnøy received a scholarship to attend the International Fishing Exhibition in Bergen, Norway, where he was awarded a silver medal for his line and cable games. This recognition was followed by another silver medal at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900, and subsequently, a silver medal from the Fishing Exhibition in Trondheim, Norway, in 1902.
As Finnøy prepares for this year’s Scottish Skipper Expo, the company will showcase its advanced propulsion systems, developed through decades of research. These technologies offer reduced fuel consumption and operational noise, benefiting both crew members and marine life. Notably, Finnøy has supplied propulsion systems for vessels owned by Mark Anderson, shipowner of 60NF, and recently secured a contract with the Shetland Island Council for a ferry repower project.
